Treasure chests have started appearing in towns, though they are rare. Now, an admin has disappeared without a trace and a virus has escaped The World! More info can be found here!

The World - a place like no other.
This massive virtual realm has drawn many, young and old, to join in the quests, events, battles, and social network.
Many events have passed here as well: Tsukasa's inability to log out, Torai-Edge's reign of terror, Haseo's 100 PKKs. Much more has passed, though we do not have time to talk about it.
The current situation is under control for now. Various treasure boxes have begun to appear in out of place areas. Much to some PC's delight, most contain rare and powerful items that can be wielded by all classes. However, these items have been infected with an odd virus. PCs have been dissappearing not long after receiving these items. Some simply lose their currently held weapons or inventory, while others have been hit so severely that their entire account gets erased.
When affected users return, if they chose to, often their logs have been warped and they cannot access old characters. Sometimes their new PC's cannot gain experience no matter how hard they try. Others cannot equip weapons, while still others have their PC's warped and distorted. The admins have been notified, but seem to ignore the pleas. Rumors that the admins and programmers have disappeared are circulating the Board. No one seems to know anything at all.
This is the beginning.
Notes on virus infected equipment: Affects can be as small as loosing funds randomly, or as large as having your char erased. If you have a viral equip, the character, MUST NOT ACTUALLY KNOW they have the virus. All viral equips MUST be approved in order to be used. Viral weapons cannot be bought, but can only exist on weapons found in dungeons. If you wish to infect a piece of found equipment, contact a DM.

Just another day in the office. Steve sighed, signing onto his console. He wasn't expecting anything amazing to happen today. He slipped on the headset and ran through the coding.
Steve was a programmer for The World. He wasn't anyone special. He woke up every day, took a shower, ate breakfast, drove to work, slipped on his headset, and scanned endless lines of coding to check and see how things were going. He was just one of the many programmers staffed by the company, so he simply did his work, went home, had dinner, and went to bed.
Nothing special.
Something caught his attention deep within the recesses of the binary. It was an extra character...
Steve blinked. It didn't seem all that important. He skimmed down a little more, and saw the symbol again.
"What does it mean?" he said to himself.
For now he decided it wasn't worth pursuing. He made a note to investigate is later. He shrugged and took off the headset, turning to some paperwork.
Plot Progress info: The virus has not yet been discovered, however, incidences still occur. Mostly small scale right now such as infected equipment that reduces prize money or random HP drops. Large scale attacks should not be happening yet.

"Miss Yukiko, you have a call on line one."
"Thank you, Sandra," Yukiko replied, picking up the phone.
"Hey, Yuki!"
Yukiko sighed. "Richard I told you not to call me that at work."
"Fine fine Miss Yukiko," the man chuckled. "Ok, down to business. There's an odd bug that's been resetting some algorithms in the money system. Seems a couple players are getting gypped after their quests. One player...I can't remember his member address, got only ten gold on the event dungeon."
"No yet, but I'll keep and eye out. The bug seems to be scooting around as if it has a mind of its own. We can't seem to quarantine it."
"Sounds more like a virus to me..."
"That's what we're thinking," Richard continued. "We don't know where it came from, or who made it, but it seems to be slowly growing. We just have to catch it soonbefore something bad happens."
"Alright, keep me posted," Yikiko replied.
"We still on for tonight at the arcade?" Richard asked.
"Oh yeah," Yukiko smiled. "I'll kick your butt."
Plot Progress info: Two new virus-ridden items can be released. If you want to apply for one, update your character info, and contact an admin. These effects must be mild.

"Hey, Sea-cow!" a male wavemaster shouted across the Mac Anu square.
"That's Sikau!" a female longarm growled, stalking over to the other. "Jurt, I told you a billion times that it's Sikau."
Jurt grinned. He loved making fun of his little sister. "So, any quests for today?" he added, putting his hands on his hips.
"Don't stand like that. It makes you look gay."
"I am gay, you loser," he answered with a chuckle.
Sikau rolled her eyes. Ah, the joys of a homosexual older brother.
She called up her quest list, peering down the pop-up. "Looks like Greg from the shop in the high city place wants some lizard scales," she observed. "I'll get about 20 gold from it, but it's worth it. We can use the extra scales to get some armor made."
"Alright, so we should head to one of the cave or jungle dungeons, right?"
Before Sikau had time to answer, an off chest appeared in the center of the city. It was odd, because no one else seemed to notice.
"You see that?" she asked her brother.
"See what?"
"There's a chest right there," she replied, pointing.
"No there's not."
"I see it," she said, taking a few steps toward it. SHe put her hand on it, and pointed, show him.
He blinked and raised an eyebrow. "You're crazy," he said.
"No I'm not. Here - I'll open it."
She did just that and gasped in surprise. Inside was a Moonlight Shadow Glaive. She lifted it out, holding it in utter awe.
"Is...is that...a Moonlight Shado Glaive?" Jurt asked, his voice shaking. "T-those thigs are incrediblly rare...like...oh my god..."
"I know..." she said, a rush of excitement running through her. "This is...amazing...!" She swung it around experimentally.
"That's so lucky!" he exclaimed.
Suddenly, Sikau's form began to shake. "What's...what's this?" she asked, looking down at her PC body.
Without a second word, she dissappeared in a splash of purple data.
The real life Sikau fell off her chair, hitting her head on the floor with a crash.
"Alice!" her brother shouted from the hallway. "Alice! You ok?"
"I'm fine..." she said, sitting up slowly. Her head burned as if it was on fire on the inside. "Are you still signed in?"
"I am, but you aren't," he replied, standing in the doorway.
Suddenly, everything went dark. Alice's vision faded, and she felt herself getting very sleeping.
"Alice! Wake up!"
Alice lay on the floor, her mind slowly shutting down.
"Alice!"
"It's ok, Chester...I'm...I'm..." she didn't get to finish as darkness enclosed her.
Plot info: Treasure chests have started appearing in towns, though they are rare. Often rewards include small, oddly safe items such as potions, spell pages, or strong weapons. Others include extremely rare items infested with 'deadly' AI viruses. Be careful!

Now we return to Steve.
The man sat down at his desk, just like any other day and clicked into The World.
Immediately, he was assaulted by an outpouring of data, alerts flashing all over.
"What is this?" he nearly shouted. He leaped to the phone, clicking the department head's line, stretching the headset's USB port across his cubical.
"Yes?" a woman's voice answered.
Steve, his headset still on, spat into the phone. "The s-servers have been infected!"
"By what?!"
"I-I don't know!" he nearly shouted.
"Alright, calm down, we'll send someone down."
Steve tried not to panic. He set the phone down as gently as possible, his heart rate increasing. If it was something he did, he could be fired!
He looked back at the coding, trying to calm himself. That character...the duplicate one...it was...it was all over the place! He gripped his head, unintentionally twisting the USB into a knot.
His hands flew to the keyboard, typing fast, running various diagnostics. He hit something that looked like a chest made of binary.
"What the hell...?"
Should he click it or not? His curiosity got the best of him.
Suddenly, he felt a sucking sensation. His entire body lifted into the air, the cord now wrapped around his wrist.
"GWAH!" he exclaimed. His feet began somehow disappearing into the monitor as if it were a vortex. "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!"
THe shout attracted atention from his neighbor, who loked up and promptly fainted, his coffee mug broken on the floor.
"WHAT THE HELL!"
Everything but his arm was now inside the machine, it still caught by the USB cord. "HELP!"
At the last second, the cord snapped, the metal part still in the port and Steve was gone.
The only thing the technicians saw of him was his half filled coffee mug sat plainly on the desk and a metal piece stuck in a ruined USB port.
